The Mexican Caribbean Grilling Festival, held in Puerto Morelos, is a significant event that not only showcases regional gastronomy and culture but also promotes the region as a global culinary destination. This statement was made by the municipal president, Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz. She praised the festival for its success in highlighting the richness of their cuisine, presented by talented chefs who enhance the identity of the Mexican Caribbean through their traditional culinary creations.
Merari also commended the festival organizers, who plan to donate a portion of the event's proceeds to the municipal DIF, a local charity organization. This contribution will support various programs and activities for the underprivileged. The festival was dedicated to Chef Federico López, a renowned culinary figure from Mexico City, who has trained many aspiring chefs and won numerous awards in his 36-year career.
Raúl Guadarrama García, the municipal Secretary of Sustainable Tourism, echoed Merari's sentiments. He emphasized that the festival aligns with their efforts to promote local and state gastronomy. However, he noted that such initiatives would be futile without the participation and organization of talented chefs, who are always at the forefront of these activities.
García expressed gratitude to the State Tourism Secretariat, Canirac, and Cooks for Quintana Roo for their support. He also highlighted the festival's collaboration with Canirac and the Secretary of Sustainable Tourism to support Cecyte, a local culinary school. This partnership allowed gastronomy students to gain practical experience by preparing and presenting dishes alongside renowned chefs, and also provided them access to a job bank.
The festival took place at La Cueva del Jaguar Park, located on the Ruta de los Cenotes. The event featured around twenty stalls where attendees enjoyed a variety of food offerings, including roasts, barbecues, tikin-xic fish, and grilled seafood. In addition to the gastronomic exhibition, the festival also hosted a grilling contest and tastings of tequila, mezcal, craft beer, and tropical cocktails.
