A major accident unfolded on Federal Highway 307, between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, when a tourist van driver, under the influence of alcohol, lost control of his vehicle. The incident took place near the exit route of the Hard Rock Riviera Maya Hotel. The white Toyota Hiace van rammed into a red Sabeiro truck from behind, which subsequently crashed into a taxi numbered 793, associated with the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río Taxi Union in Playa del Carmen.

The crash resulted in one casualty, who was rushed to a hospital after paramedics on the scene deemed the individual in need of immediate medical care. The National Guard Division Highways arrived promptly at the scene and apprehended the driver responsible for the accident. The driver will face charges from the Quintana Roo State Prosecutor's Office for driving under the influence on a federal road.

The driver's reckless behavior was met with heavy criticism on social media, with users labeling him as "irresponsible". The incident underscored the importance of the National Guard's monitoring of Federal Highway 307 to prevent such accidents. Many comments stressed the need for more stringent measures to deter drunk drivers from putting other lives at risk.

The accident prompted the swift response of emergency services and led to a significant traffic blockage. However, the timing of the incident mitigated the severity of the traffic disruption. Tow trucks were dispatched to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the area. The National Guard, as the appropriate authority, will carry out necessary investigations to ascertain the exact cause of the accident and assign liabilities.

This unfortunate incident underscores the critical importance of road safety and driver responsibility. Drunk driving is a serious offense with potentially devastating outcomes, as evidenced by other accidents on the same Federal Highway 307. Moreover, long-distance driving can lead to fatigue, as demonstrated last week when a tractor-trailer overturned on Federal Highway 307, between Playa del Carmen and Akumal. The driver had fallen asleep at the wheel, resulting in a loss of control over the vehicle.
