Playa del Carmen, a popular tourist destination, is facing an irreversible erosion issue. This problem is not unique to the area but is common among many Caribbean beaches, according to Vladimir Caballero Camejo, a coastal engineering specialist from GAMMA Service in Cuba.
Caballero Camejo spoke on this issue in Playa del Carmen, discussing alternatives for coastal erosion control. He referenced a United Nations Environment Programme study conducted in 2003, which confirmed widespread coastal erosion throughout the Caribbean. He noted that all Caribbean countries are grappling with similar issues, with coastal losses ranging from 0.25 meters to 2.25 meters.
The erosion is primarily caused by rising sea levels, a sand deficit, and inadequate coastal management. "The phenomenon is continuous. Many Caribbean beaches, including those in Playa del Carmen, are experiencing irreversible erosion. This trend is observable when comparing current images to photos taken 20 years ago," Caballero Camejo warned.
He emphasized the need for effective beach management and proper coastline planning to combat this issue. However, he also noted that solutions must be customized for each beach, considering its unique characteristics, functionality, and usage.
"Restoring a beach is not just about tourism. It also serves as a coastal defense and reduces vulnerability risks for local populations," he added.
Regarding the presence of sargassum, a type of seaweed, Caballero Camejo clarified that it does not directly contribute to beach erosion. However, the methods used to remove it from sandy areas can have an impact.
