Fishermen in Playa del Carmen are eagerly awaiting a decision on their scale fishing permits from the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fishing (Conapesca). This comes after a 15-year wait for a resolution. José Gómez Burgos, president of the Xaman Ha fishing cooperative, has indicated that recent meetings with the department head, Alejandro Flores Nava, have significantly expedited the process.

"We've made more progress in a short time than we have in many years. We're now on the brink of a decision that will determine if we finally receive our permits," said Gómez Burgos. Although the official notification has not yet been received, the cooperative has been assured that the documents are being processed. This assurance has boosted the fishermen's confidence in a positive outcome.

Once the permits are granted, the cooperative will need to update its records. This includes a census of fishermen, boats, species caught, and the projected catch volume for the coming years. This data will be crucial in regulating fishing activities and promoting sustainability in the region.

The fishing community has consistently emphasized the importance of these permits. They are essential for operating within the law and enhancing the local economy. With a decision now imminent, the fishermen hope that Conapesca will speed up the final steps, allowing them to conduct their work with certainty.
